This weekend my friend Katie and I teamed up to be leaders at a youth event with our church called D-Now (Disciple Now). We led a group of nine, 13 year-old girls (8th grade) from Friday night until Sunday morning after church. People within the church volunteered their homes for the weekend and we stayed at our “host home” with the Chasons. They were awesome, very welcoming and easygoing. The mission for the weekend was to encourage our girls to understand the need to memorize scripture and accept the challenge at the end of the weekend to memorize 13 verses in 13 weeks. It was exhausting to say the least but I learned a lot and hopefully so did the girls.
We went to our “host home” where we were staying after that and did our first bible study with the girls. Katie led the first study and we both felt a little defeated afterwards. We realized that 13 was a hard age and revised the rest of our studies to work around what we got out of the girls the first night.
Saturday morning we all put on the t-shirts we made the night before and then caravanned to the “Rec Day.” We spent the day playing all sorts of team building games and ended the day with capture the flag before heading home. Saturday night ended with another short sermon, concert and a bible study back at our “host home.”
Sunday morning we all got ready and went to church together. It ended up being a great weekend and I’m really glad I did it. I am amazed at how quickly I grew attached to the girls and how concerned I felt about their faith. The girls want us to be their leaders again next year so maybe we’ll be leaders for D-Now 2012. Only time will tell.
