Dogs and a Baby

Before we had Kennedy, we had 2 other babies, Stewart and Lexi.

We always said we wouldn’t feel differently about the dogs when we had a baby… and then we had a baby

You know that saying, I love you, but I really don’t like you right now?

That about sums it up for me lately. I think David feels the same, but not to the same extent. The dogs are doing great with the baby and I know their normal routine has done a total 180, but I just really wish they weren’t so dog-ish right now.

We don’t tiptoe around the house with Kennedy because I want her to be able to sleep in whatever situation she’s in at the time. Basically, I don’t want her to need absolute silence and blackout curtains to fall asleep. That said, the first 2 weeks when all she did was sleep and eat, she paid ZERO attention to the dogs. She was used to the noise from hearing it while I was pregnant and the dogs could bark right next to her and she wouldn’t flinch. But, with each week she becomes more aware, more alert and the dogs KEEP WAKING HER UP or scaring her or both.

Situations like these…

We went for a walk the other night and both dogs started barking at a guy that was running on the other side of the street. Kennedy was so scared she started screaming… like the only time she’s ever been inconsolable. That walk lasted about a minute.

Around 5am the other night I had just finished feeding her and put her back down. I opened my closet door to get something and immediately Stewart starts growling and barking. It didn’t scare her, but she was wide awake after that. We had to take turns getting her back to sleep for the next, oh hour and a half. We might as well have just started the morning.

If they see a squirrel in the backyard while they’re inside, or a cat on the TV, and if someone comes to the front door watch out. They feed off each other and get tunnel vision and you can’t get their attention sometimes. Don’t get me wrong, I know dogs bark and I’m not trying to totally silence them, but my patience for the freak outs is slim… ok kind of non-existent.

I still love my dogs, but they’re driving me crazy. Maybe it has to do with being home all day with them now, too. Whatever it is, I wouldn’t mind sending them to my parents for a while and picking them up at a later time and date. Like I said, “I love you, but I really don’t like you right now.”

  1. Melissa , I am so glad you are using cloth diapers. I think they are so much better for babies also. I have to admit that I tried using them about 20 years ago and as you know I had the old ones with the pins and they really were not fancy at all. HA. I will be honest and tell you after a week of using them I was done, they wee used for burp cloths not diapers. (I know I could and shold have tried a little longer. I pricked my baby with the pin and that gave me an excuse to call it quits. I have to say washing out the diapers was not my favorite thing by any means. I do look back and wish that I had tried a little more instead of giving up so fast but I guess I can’t do anything about it know other than PRAISE the ones who do stick to it. SO Thanks for thinking of our landfills and most of all I am sure that Kennedy says Thank You. Hope you have a nice weekend.

  2. We do not have a dog but our neighbor/sister-inlaw whom live next door has a dog that see’s us daily and everytime we move and she see’s us she barks. Every morning they walk to get the newspaper it barks. (4:30-5:00) every morning even on weekends. What a pain. I feel your PAIN. I hope it gets better for you.
