What’s in a Name

I felt a lot of pressure when we were trying to think of a real name for Guppy. It’s a name she has to live with for the rest of her life and I really want her to like it!

My requirements for her name:

– I wanted her name to be a little different without being “weird”
– I didn’t want anything close to the “top 10” because I think it was so annoying in school to deal with multiples. Melissa S., Melissa D., Melissa on and on… you know what I mean. (My name actually wasn’t THAT common)
– I wanted both David and I to REALLY like the name and not just concede to the other person.
– It had to sound good with the middle name that was already decided on.

We ended up with 2 girl names that we went back and forth between for a while. I think my sister and Rachie were the only people who knew the 2 possible names. After a while we realized, that while we kept tossing the 2 names around, we were referring to her by 1 name pretty consistently. That’s how we knew. We kept it quiet until we were sure because we didn’t want other people’s opinions. Once we had a name we were happy with it didn’t matter what anyone else thought and we weren’t wishy-washy about it.

I suppose I’ve kept it quiet long enough now though and she’ll be here in a few weeks anyways so now’s as good a time as any.

Our baby girl’s name is…

KennedyName-2

Kennedy has been on my list of baby names for a LONG time. I started my list sometime in college and I’m pretty sure it’s been on there from the beginning. Other than that, there was no other reasoning. We simply really like the name. I actually considered not naming her Kennedy for a while because it means “ugly head” or “misshapen head”… sad story right?! Well, we liked the name so much that David said it was stupid to worry about the meaning and that he’d create a website saying her name meant something really cool if she ever needed it. I did end up finding 1 site that said it meant “strength” so we’ll go with that.

Her middle name was easy. Brooke is my sister’s middle name. My middle name, Joy, is my mom’s, sister’s middle name and I’ve always thought it was special. So, for as long as I can remember, I knew that if I had a daughter her middle name would be Brooke.

And that’s how we picked a name for our first baby. I can’t wait to meet you Kennedy!

  1. I bet your sister is honored to have her middle name after her. My daughter did the same to her sister. I was wondering if it would be okay if I sent a little something to Kennedy? ( I understand if you do not want me to not knowing me but I would love to repay you for giving me the Lumberjack Santa) and also I love to buy for little angels. Tammie

  2. Aww! I love this! I’ve always thought it was pretty special too! Kennedy will love being named after someone who will always be special to her!
